Like Dorothy, I have travelled down the Yellow Brick Road with my band of misfit friends: Ignorance, Insecurity and Fear. And, like Dorothy, I had my sights set on the Emerald City. It was a place of hope and redemption. A place where all my dreams would come true. At some points, the road was kind. Other points on the road were hard to navigate, full of difficult terrain. But, my trusty friends kept me company. Ignorance kept me blind to the truth, Insecurity helped me point the finger at someone else and take the blame off myself and Fear kept me from making difficult decisions.
Keeping sight of the Emerald City is the key to making it through the tougher times. Then, just like Dorothy, once we reach our destination, we realize that the strength to achieve our goal has lied within ourselves and that the “destination” is just another landmark on our lifelong journey. What we learn about ourselves along the way empowers us to keep making the adjustments and changes we need to be successful.
My visit to Emerald City was short. I’ve moved on to other destinations. My companions have also changed and grown into something else. Ignorance is growing to become Wisdom, Insecurity has shed her layers of “tin” and become Confidence and Fear has broken out of her prison and is now Courage.
May you find your Yellow Brick Road. May you find Wisdom, Confidence and Courage along the way, and may your Emerald City be everything you hoped it would be!
